TN
That U.S. opportunity is worth a conversation. Explore professional work through the TN pathway.
Picture a Coquitlam family where one parent is offered an L-1A executive transfer while grandparents, a spouse's career and school-aged children all factor into the decision. The visa petition is only one part of the planning; the household logistics need their own checklist.

L-1A is one of six pathways we track alongside TN, L-1B, E-2, EB-5 and Gold Card. A multi-generational household move often touches more than one category at once, so it helps to separate the primary applicant's case from everyone else's questions.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
Build the evidence for both ends of the transfer.

An executive or manager transfer depends on proving both the qualifying role abroad and a genuinely managerial or executive role in the U.S. Family logistics run on a separate track and benefit from being planned early rather than left until after approval.

A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.
Document the applicant's actual authority abroad, including who they supervise or what function they direct, since L-1A depends on genuine executive or managerial content, not job title alone.
Confirm at least one continuous year of qualifying employment abroad within the three years before the transfer and gather HR records to support it.
Write out the reporting structure, staff size and decision-making authority the applicant will hold in the U.S. office, since this shapes both the initial approval and any later extension.
List who is relocating, whether that includes extended family who are not eligible as dependents, and what separate plans they may need to make.
If your household includes people beyond a spouse and minor children, use the journey tool or book a free initial consultation and describe everyone's situation so the right questions get raised for each person.

USCIS recognizes a spouse and unmarried children under 21 as eligible to accompany or follow an L-1A transferee. Other relatives, such as parents or adult children, are not covered by this category and would need to look at separate immigration options if they intend to move as well.
An employee transferring to an existing U.S. office may be granted an initial stay of up to three years, with extensions available in increments of up to two years, to a maximum of seven years total, according to USCIS.
Since a 2021 policy change, USCIS considers L-2 spouses employment authorized incident to their status in most cases, meaning many L-2 spouses do not need a separate employment authorization document to work, though some choose to request one anyway.
USCIS looks at whether the position genuinely involves directing the organization, a major function, or supervising other managers or professionals, rather than performing the underlying work personally. A title like 'manager' is not sufficient on its own without matching duties.
