Let’s make your move.
WORK.
BUILD.
BELONG.

Take a Burnaby-based professional who has a specific U.S. job offer in hand. TN status depends heavily on whether the actual job duties fall within a listed professional occupation, so the first task is matching the offer letter to that list carefully, not assuming a job title alone is enough.

LET’S FIND THE WAY.

TN sits alongside L-1A, L-1B, E-2, EB-5 and Gold Card as one of six service pathways we track. For someone with a concrete U.S. job offer and a Canadian degree or credential, TN is usually the first category worth examining closely.

TN eligibility rests on three things: a qualifying profession, the right credentials for that profession, and a genuine prearranged job matching it. Gathering proof of all three before any border appointment or filing avoids surprises later.

01

Match the job to a qualifying occupation

Compare the actual duties described in the offer letter against the USCIS list of TN-qualifying professions, since job titles alone do not determine eligibility.

02

Confirm the credential requirement

Identify the specific degree, licence or credential the occupation requires and gather diplomas, transcripts or licensing records that prove you meet it.

03

Secure a detailed employer support letter

Ask the U.S. employer for a letter describing the position, duties, salary and prearranged nature of the job, since this document does most of the work in a TN case.

04

Plan the entry method

As a Canadian citizen, decide whether to seek TN status at a land port of entry, a preclearance location, or through a separate petition process, and prepare documents accordingly.

BEFORE THE BIG MOVE

LET’S CLEAR
A FEW THINGS UP.

Which occupations qualify for TN status?

USCIS guidance lists specific professional occupations, including accountants, engineers, lawyers, pharmacists, scientists and teachers among others, each with its own credential requirement. A role has to fit one of these listed categories; general professional experience outside the list does not qualify on its own.

Where can a Canadian citizen apply for TN status?

Canadian citizens can request TN classification at a U.S. port of entry or a preclearance location without first filing a petition with USCIS, according to USCIS guidance. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has also designated certain ports, including Vancouver's preclearance facility, for optimized processing of first-time applicants.

Can my spouse work while I am in TN status?

Not automatically. A spouse in TD status may accompany a TN worker and study, but TD status does not itself carry work authorization; a spouse who wants to work generally needs their own qualifying status.

How long can TN status last?

TN status is typically granted in increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the position and qualifications continue to meet the requirements, since it is not subject to the fixed maximum stay that applies to some other categories.
