PROGRAMME BRIEFING · ELECTORAL AREA AElectoral Area A

A new route.Know the details.

Take a hypothetical Electoral Area A household where one parent hopes to move first and bring the family across later. Under the Gold Card, each spouse and unmarried child under 21 who will join must be considered in the initial application, and each carries their own processing fee and gift. Sequencing travel is possible; deferring the paperwork is not.

IN THIS GUIDE · Planning staggered household arrivals

Start with the GOLD CARD eligibility and application overview

01

Decide the household list before applying

The initial application is where the household is defined. A spouse and unmarried children under 21 who intend to join must be considered at that point, whether they travel in the first month or a year afterwards. Nobody should assume a relative left off the list can simply be added later without further cost or review. Where plans are genuinely undecided — a teenager finishing school, a spouse mid-contract — raise the uncertainty with counsel before the application is submitted.

02

Count the cost per person, not per family

Amounts scale with the number of people, not the household. An individual principal pays a US$15,000 nonrefundable processing fee and, after successful vetting, a US$1,000,000 gift. Each joining spouse or unmarried child under 21 adds another US$15,000 and another US$1,000,000. A couple with one child therefore faces US$45,000 in nonrefundable fees and US$3,000,000 in gifts. Corporate families are not exempt: the per-employee corporate figures are separate, and family members still carry their own amounts.

03

Map arrival plans onto the official sequence

The published route runs from the online application and fee, through USCIS instructions for Form I-140G supporting documents submitted on the official portal, then vetting, the gift when instructed, an EB-1 or EB-2 determination subject to visa availability, and possibly an interview or further documents. Family members follow the process too. A staggered arrival plan should be pinned to completed steps for each person rather than to a hoped-for month, because nothing about later travel is settled until the applicable steps conclude.

04

Plan the practical side of living apart

Living in two places has consequences the immigration file does not address. Schooling calendars, housing commitments, employment notice periods and health coverage all need dates. Taxation matters as well: a Gold Card holder is taxed on worldwide income under the ordinary rules applying to lawful permanent residents, and a household split across two countries can complicate that picture. Ask a qualified tax adviser about the specific facts rather than assuming a staggered move is tax-neutral.

05

Answer the eligibility question before the sequencing question

Households planning a staged move naturally start with logistics, because those are the decisions that feel urgent and within their control. Two prior questions deserve to be settled first, and both can be answered in weeks. The first is whether the principal's record could support a determination under EB-1 or EB-2, since that determination still has to be made and remains subject to visa availability, and no arrangement of the family's travel affects it. Ask for that view in writing, identifying which evidence would establish the category and how much of it exists today. The second is whether every person on the intended list bears examination, because each is assessed on their own admissibility and the payment purchases neither a classification nor relief from any ground. A difficulty in one family member's history is a household matter, and it is far cheaper to find before the list is priced than after. Only when both answers exist does the sequencing conversation — who moves first, how long a separation is acceptable, what triggers a change of plan — rest on something. Confirm current terms and amounts from official sources at the same time, since neither is fixed and a plan built on last year's understanding is built on nothing. Hypothetical example: a household spends two months planning who travels when, and the eligibility view obtained afterwards changes the composition of the list the whole plan assumed.
