Read the general professional work overview
Forester, including sylviculturist, qualifies through a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial license. A provincial forestry licensing body in British Columbia can be a source of license-path documentation, but as with other license-alternative categories, the license itself must authorize forestry practice. The first review should produce a short credential route decision: degree or licence, the original record that proves it, and any translation or evaluation needed. It should also test the employer's actual duties against the forester category before the letter is drafted. TN is for a Canadian or Mexican citizen in a listed profession; it does not permit self-employment.
Choose and document one path clearly
For the degree path, gather the forestry or sylviculture degree transcript. For the license path, gather the provincial forestry license or registration certificate, confirming what practice it authorizes. The degree certificate alone may not show the field of study, so pair it with the transcript and, where names differ, a name-change record. Decide which route is simpler and fully supported; do not combine a partial degree case with a partial licence case and assume the two add up.
Address a foreign or differently structured credential carefully
An applicant trained and worked as a forester outside Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. and holds a foreign forestry credential rather than a Canadian one. A credentials evaluation addressing equivalence to a U.S. baccalaureate is the appropriate next step; an informal assurance from an evaluator or employer that the foreign credential is "basically the same" is not a substitute for that evaluation, and no such equivalence should be asserted without it.
Match duties to forestry management, not equipment operation
The employer letter should describe forest management, sylviculture planning, or forestry research duties, not primarily equipment-operation or logging-labor duties, which fall outside the professional category. Hypothetical example: a forestry graduate is asked to sign a letter calling a position forestry consultant, but the weekly plan is mostly operating harvesting equipment. The decision is whether the employer can describe genuine professional forestry duties or should reconsider the proposed role. The job schedule, reporting line, project scope, and credential records are the documents that settle it.
