Mathematician, a category that includes statistician, requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related quantitative field. Data-focused job titles have multiplied in recent years, and not all of them describe mathematics or statistics work in substance. Three conditions apply alongside the credential. The employment must be prearranged with a United States employer or entity, since the category does not permit an applicant to work for their own account; the applicant must be a citizen of Canada or Mexico; and the duties must genuinely be those of the listed profession rather than a differently shaped role that happens to carry a quantitative title.
Confirm the degree field connects to mathematics or statistics
Gather the transcript, and, where the degree is in a closely related quantitative field rather than mathematics or statistics by name, be ready to explain the connection to a credentials evaluator or in the employer's documentation. The transcript usually does the work here, because quantitative degrees vary widely in content and the course list is what shows the connection. Probability, mathematical statistics, regression and experimental design, stochastic processes and numerical methods all support the claim in a way that a degree title alone may not, particularly where the award is in a field such as economics, engineering or computer science. Where the degree was earned outside Canada, Mexico or the United States, arrange a credentials evaluation and ask in advance what that evaluation actually certifies, since evaluations differ in scope.
Test a data-oriented title against the duties
An applicant with a statistics degree is offered a role titled "Data Scientist," with duties described as building predictive models and analyzing large datasets. Whether that maps to the statistician category depends on whether the duties are substantively statistical analysis, and the offer letter should describe the actual analytical work in those terms rather than relying on the title alone. Hypothetical example: an insurer offers a role building and validating statistical models of claim frequency and severity, described in the draft letter as analytics. The duties are substantively statistical, but the letter is not, and the fix is a description written in the discipline's own terms: the methods used, the data analysed, the inferences drawn and who reviews the output. A first review would ask for that rewriting and would separately ask what proportion of the week is analysis rather than reporting, since the answer sometimes changes the assessment entirely.
Gather the full support package
Collect the degree transcript, a detailed employer letter describing the mathematical or statistical duties, and, if the degree is foreign, a credentials evaluation. The letter should also give the employer's identity, the worksite, the period of the engagement and the person who supervises the work, since those facts establish that the employment is prearranged and directed by someone other than the applicant. Avoid wording describing the analyst as engaging clients directly or invoicing for projects. Keep the credential documents in their own part of the file, separate from the commercial paperwork, because the two answer different questions and are examined separately and for different reasons.
