How does frequent internal travel affect household planning?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

If the training assignment includes several sites, discuss the family’s base and anticipated absences alongside immigration review of the work locations and travel. These are both practical and potentially legal questions. Eligible spouse and child plans require individual documentation; do not assume a travelling role removes any status or admission requirement.

Base the family on the household's needs

Choosing a base near the first site can prove wrong within months if the schedule shifts. Discuss whether a spouse's work prospects, schooling, or support networks should determine the location instead. A spouse in valid L-2S status is authorized to work incident to that status; children in L2 are not work authorized, and only unmarried children under 21 are eligible.

Set a point to revisit the arrangement once the schedule is real. Add one further consideration to that revisit point: what happens if the assignment is extended. A role built around delivering a method to multiple sites is among the most likely to run longer than planned, and a household that has optimised entirely for the original period — a short lease, a school place taken as a temporary arrangement, a spouse's career paused rather than moved — can find the second period considerably harder than the first.

Sketch the longer version once at the outset and note which decisions would need revisiting. Hypothetical example: a building-automation commissioning specialist's family plans for fourteen months, spends an hour writing down what a three-year version would require, and identifies two commitments worth structuring differently from the start at essentially no extra cost.
