IN THIS GUIDE · TN planning for a college teacher hired under a fixed-term teaching assignment
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Confirm the degree meets the college teacher category
TN eligibility for a college teacher generally rests on a bachelor's or licenciatura degree, so start by confirming the applicant's actual credential rather than assuming a teaching background alone is sufficient. Ask whether the institution expects additional qualifications for the specific subject or level, such as a graduate degree or demonstrated research record, since institutional hiring standards can exceed the baseline TN requirement. Keep the degree question separate from the institution's own tenure-track or adjunct policies, which are not immigration questions. Where the degree was awarded outside Canada or the United States, obtain the transcript and an evaluation together, since a reviewer comparing the subject taught with the credential earned wants both in front of them. Note also that the listed category covers teaching at the college, seminary or university level; instruction at a secondary school is a different matter and does not become a college teaching post because the students happen to be older.
Match the contract's actual terms to the teaching duties
Get the written contract and compare its stated term, course load, and duties against what a college teacher role should look like: instruction, course preparation, and related academic responsibilities at a postsecondary institution. A contract that blends significant administrative, research, or unrelated duties needs a closer look at whether teaching remains the real core of the position. Confirm the assignment's actual length, including whether it renews, since a single semester and a multi-year appointment raise different planning questions. What most often derails a file here is a contract that reads as a service agreement. Watch for language making the instructor responsible for their own scheduling, permitting substitution of another instructor, or paying a fee for a completed course rather than for employment. TN does not accommodate self-employment, and an institution that engages instructors through a personal corporation should be asked directly how the relationship is structured.
Check for course-specific or accreditation requirements
Some institutions or specific courses carry their own credential expectations beyond a general degree, particularly in technical or licensed fields being taught at the college level. Ask the hiring department whether the course assignment requires a credential the applicant does not yet hold, and resolve that separately from the TN filing itself. Treat institutional accreditation standards as the department's responsibility to confirm, while the TN review focuses on whether the degree and duties support the profession category. Two records answer this quickly: the course outline the department will use, and the written statement of qualifications the department applies to that outline. Ask for both by email so the answer exists in a form that can be reread. Where a licence to practise underlies the subject being taught, keep that licensing question separate from immigration eligibility, since holding a professional licence is not what the teaching category asks about.
Align the academic calendar with the filing timeline
Academic terms start on fixed dates, which puts real pressure on the filing schedule compared with roles that can shift more freely. Identify the term start date early and work backward to see whether the credential confirmation, contract finalization, and any needed travel can realistically be completed in time. If the assignment is short, weigh whether the preparation effort matches the length of the appointment, and discuss a fallback if the original term-start date is not achievable. Hypothetical example: a private polytechnic needs to fill a mid-year vacancy in its welding-technology programme eight weeks before classes begin. Working backwards, the contract must be signed, the transcript verified, and any evaluation completed well before travel, and none of those steps compress usefully. If the sequence does not fit, the honest options are a later term or a different instructor, not a rushed presentation of an incomplete file at a port of entry.
