THE SHORT ANSWER

The economist entry requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree. The degree's subject matter must support the work proposed; do not assume any degree is sufficient. The duties must be those of an economist, rather than primarily financial analysis, market research or marketing simply labelled as economics. Two conditions sit alongside the credential and are just as decisive. The employment must be prearranged with a United States employer or entity, since this category does not permit an applicant to work for their own account, and the applicant must be a citizen of Canada or Mexico. Admission may be requested at a port of entry or, where an employer prefers, through a petition, and the same requirements apply either way.

01

Connect the degree's subject matter to economist duties

Gather the degree and transcript, then identify coursework that supports the proposed economist duties. A different degree title is not automatically disqualifying where there is significant subject-matter overlap, but a business, finance or other degree does not qualify merely because it is related in a broad sense. Have the education and actual role assessed together. Where the degree title differs from economics, ask the employer to describe the analytical work in the terms the discipline itself uses, then read the transcript for the courses that correspond. Econometrics, macroeconomic theory, statistical methods and applied economic analysis carry more weight in that comparison than a course simply titled economics for managers. If the applicant also holds a graduate degree in the field, include it, but keep the baccalaureate documents in the file as well, because that is the level the entry actually specifies.

02

Test the job title against the actual duties

A company offers a position titled "Economist" that, per the draft duties description, consists mainly of building financial models and preparing investment recommendations for clients, duties that may be closer to a financial analyst role than to economic analysis such as studying economic trends, forecasting, or policy research. Ask the employer for a duties breakdown before treating the title as sufficient. Hypothetical example: a utility retains an economist to model regional labour supply and produce demand forecasts used in its long-range planning submissions. Those duties describe economic analysis directly and are straightforward to document. Compare that with a role whose day consists of client portfolio reviews, and the difference becomes clear without any argument about titles. A first review would ask for a written duties breakdown with approximate proportions of time, and would treat a refusal to provide one as a signal worth pausing on.

03

Assemble the supporting file

Collect the degree transcript, the employer letter describing genuinely economics-focused duties, and, if the degree is foreign, a credentials evaluation. Keep the credential evidence and the commercial evidence in separate parts of the file, since they answer different questions and are examined for different reasons. The letter should give the employer's identity, the worksite, the period and the supervisor, which together establish that the work is prearranged and directed by someone other than the applicant. Where a foreign credentials evaluation is used, ask what the evaluation actually certifies before paying for it, because evaluations vary in scope and one written for a licensing body may not address the question here at all.
