Read the general professional work overview
For the engineer category, the file must show either a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in engineering or a state or provincial engineering license, matched to duties that are genuinely engineering work rather than a related but distinct occupation. A Canadian P.Eng. license is a recognized alternative to a degree, but the applicant's actual duties, not the job title, determine whether the category fits.
Confirm which qualifying path applies
There are two paths: a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in engineering (with a credentials evaluation if the degree was earned outside Canada, Mexico, or the U.S.), or a state or provincial engineering license, such as one issued by a Canadian provincial engineering regulator. The license is a listed alternative to the degree, not a workaround, but only one path needs to be documented. Gather the records for the path actually being used rather than mixing partial evidence from both.
Work through a duties-mismatch example
An applicant with a mechanical engineering degree is offered a role titled "Product Engineer" at a manufacturing company. Before treating the title as sufficient, compare the position description against genuine engineering duties, such as design, analysis, and testing, versus adjacent duties like production scheduling or quality-control administration that may belong to a different occupation. If the duties lean toward the latter, ask the employer for a duties breakdown by proportion of time, not just a title change.
Assemble supporting evidence and confirm citizenship proof
Gather the degree transcript or parchment or the provincial license certificate, and a detailed employer letter describing the engineering duties, compensation, and intended period. Separately confirm proof of Canadian citizenship, such as a Canadian passport; a Canadian permanent resident card documents residency, not citizenship, and does not establish TN eligibility on its own.
Match the file to where the request will be made
The same engineering evidence is presented very differently depending on the route chosen. Where a Canadian citizen requests admission at a port of entry, everything has to be legible in a single encounter: the passport establishing citizenship, the employer's letter describing engineering duties, the degree or provincial licence for the path being relied upon, and any credentials evaluation for a degree earned outside Canada, Mexico or the United States. Nothing can be supplied later in that setting. Where the employer instead files a petition on Form I-129, the same material is reviewed over a longer period and a request for further evidence can be answered in writing. Neither route changes the underlying requirement, and neither accommodates self-employment, so a role structured as contracting to one's own company does not become workable by choosing a different door. Decide the route before assembling the binder, because it determines whether an evaluation still in progress is a delay or a disqualification. Hypothetical example: a biomedical engineer offered a role designing veterinary imaging equipment holds a degree from a third country, and the pending evaluation makes the petition route the calmer choice.
