What does the currency exposure actually cost?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

More than the headline rate. Count the spread charged on conversion, transfer and correspondent bank fees, any tax arising on a sale or distribution made to raise the funds, and the difference between the rate assumed at planning and the rate obtained on the day. Each reduces what actually reaches the enterprise.

Budget a margin above the requirement

Plan to convert and send more than the exact figure so charges deducted in transit cannot leave the investment short. Ask the receiving party to confirm in writing the amount credited, and reconcile it against the requirement rather than against what was sent. Keep this margin separate from filing fees, legal fees, translations and medical examinations, which are additional to the capital and continue across the family throughout the process.

Ask the transferring bank in advance what it charges and what a correspondent is likely to deduct, since those figures are obtainable and are usually left as an estimate. Add the tax arising on whatever was sold or distributed to raise the funds, which is frequently the largest of the deductions and the one most often modelled optimistically. Then compare the total against the requirement with the margin included.

Filing fees, legal fees, translations and medical examinations sit outside the capital entirely and continue across each family member throughout the process.
