Read the general eligibility basics overview
A household comparing a temporary US visa route with a longer-term permanent residence plan is really comparing two different kinds of status with different requirements, timelines and dependent rules. Canadian permanent residence held by a household member does not carry over as a qualifying status in either the temporary or the permanent US route; each has to be evaluated on its own terms. The nationality point deserves stating separately because it decides cases outright. TN is available only to citizens of Canada or Mexico, and E-2 requires nationality of a treaty country; Canadian permanent residence supplies neither, however long it has been held. The L categories turn on the employment relationship rather than nationality, so a household can find that its members have genuinely different options.
Separate the temporary route's requirements from the household's assumptions
A temporary category such as TN depends on the applicant's own citizenship, a listed profession and a qualifying job offer; a spouse's status under TD does not authorize employment, and children are not separately authorized by dependency. If the household is assuming that one member's temporary status or Canadian permanent residence will smooth the way for others, confirm each person's individual eligibility rather than treating the household as a single unit. Set the household out as a list of individuals with three columns: citizenship, current status, and what that person would need in order to work or study. Filling that table usually takes an hour and frequently changes the plan, because assumptions that survive conversation rarely survive a column headed citizenship. Where a family member holds more than one nationality, record both, since a second passport occasionally opens a route the household had not considered.
Understand what a permanent route actually requires
Employment-based permanent routes generally require a specific qualifying basis, such as a sponsoring employer's petition or, for investor categories, a qualifying at-risk investment meeting the applicable threshold and other conditions. Availability of a visa number and admissibility also affect timing and are not guaranteed by any planning step taken in advance. A temporary visa held now does not convert automatically into permanent status later; it is a separate application with its own requirements. Ask as well what happens if the sponsoring basis disappears. An employment-based permanent route generally depends on a specific employer and a specific role, so a redundancy or a restructuring partway through can undo years of process, and the household's temporary status may depend on the same employer. Knowing that in advance is not pessimism; it is what allows a family to decide how much of its life to commit and in what order.
Plan the sequence rather than assuming one leads to the other
Decide which route, temporary, permanent, or both in sequence, actually fits the household's current facts, and confirm each family member's status and authorization separately for each stage. Have an independent review confirm dependent eligibility and work authorization limits before making relocation commitments based on an assumed progression from one status to the next. Hypothetical example: one parent is a Canadian citizen with a job offer in a listed profession, the other holds Canadian permanent residence and citizenship of a third country, and both had assumed either could be the principal. A first review would establish each person's citizenship from their passport, identify which categories are open to each, and then ask which arrangement serves the household best rather than which was assumed. It would also confirm what the accompanying spouse would be permitted to do under each arrangement before anything is decided.
