Official material describes the process in terms of weeks, but that is a description rather than a commitment, and vetting, visa availability, an interview, or a further document request can each extend it. Set a review point instead of a departure date, and reassess after each confirmed step rather than in advance of all of them.
Move the date forward as evidence arrives
Start with a wide window, a season rather than a week, and narrow it as each step completes. When the portal submission is accepted, when an interview is scheduled, when a decision is received: each is a point at which the estimate can legitimately tighten. Tell family and employers the window rather than a day, and explain that it comes from a process with conditions outside your control rather than from indecision.
Explain the window to employers and schools in the same terms used inside the household, since a consistent account is easier to maintain and easier to revise. Saying that the family expects to move within a stated season, subject to a government step that has no published decision time, is both accurate and unremarkable to anyone who has hired internationally before. It also leaves room to narrow the window later without appearing to have changed the plan.
Where a school or employer needs a firm date, ask what the latest possible notice is rather than offering an early guess.
